It is with much sadness that the children of Ronald (Ron) Edgar Adams announce his passing on Sunday, March 13, 2005 at the age of 71 years.
Born on September 8, 1933 to Edgar Giles Adams and Julie Hanna (nee Wangler) of Calgary, Ron was raised in the city that he loved from early childhood to later in life. As a young boy, he attended Sacred Heart Elementary and King Edward High School in south Calgary. He spent much of his free time riding horses on and around the family farm and pursuing youthful activities such as catching frogs in the sloughs where Garrison Woods and Currie Barracks are now located. As a young man attending cadet training, Ron’s interests shifted to a faster pace when he joined the Calgary Motorcycle Club and rode with local legends, such as Walt Healy. He met Dorothy Irene Miller while working in the oilfield in Edson, AB and they were married in early 1960. Ron became father to Dorothy’s daughter Pam and soon after the family members increased with a son Daniel, a daughter Sharon, and another son Brian. Ron and Dorothy purchased a small farm in Didsbury, AB in 1966 and moved their family to rural farm life. The marriage ended in divorce and Ron returned to Calgary to live. He met and married Eileen Myers (nee Macleod) in 1976. They divorced several years later.
Ron worked for various companies during his life, including Canadian Fina Oil Ltd., Dome Petroleum, Bird Oilfield Supply and became a Junior Partner in Candel Oilfield Supply. He made the decision to work for himself and Anchorage Oilfield Supply was created. The company grew from the meagre beginnings on the dining room table to employing a staff of twelve. During the next years, times in the oilfield were hard on many smaller companies and when several customers were unable to meet their large financial obligations to Anchorage, Ron was faced with making the hard choice of closing down Anchorage before it fell into financial despair. He did so with dignity.
Ron Adams had a soft spot for most animals and a particular love for dogs. He liked fishing for the “big” ones, golfing, dancing, and dressing up to dine on good food. He was proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, and loved them all. He was a true Calgarian and took great pride in the city’s roots, people and spirit.
Mourning his loss are two daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Robert Copeland of Edson, AB and Sharon and Myles McDonald of Saudi Arabia and Calgary; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel and Dianna and Brian, all of Calgary. He also leaves behind a grandson Kyle; four granddaughters, Kelsey, Samantha, Sabrina, and Kaylyn; and one great-granddaughter Teegan. Ron was predeceased by both parents and his brother Jack Adams of Surrey, BC.
Funeral Services will be held at Gateway International Church (235 – 8A Street N.E.) on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. John Pritchard officiating. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
