1939 – 2014
Sarah (Sadie) Abbott passed away in Calgary on February 5, 2014 at the age of 74 years.
She will be dearly missed and forever remembered by her daughter Alison, her son Victor, her much loved sister Marion and brother-in-law John, her nieces (Sandra, Karen and Elaine), her brother-in-law Don Wilkins (Linda) and her faithful companion Max. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon, mother Janet and father Alec.
Sadie was born in Scotland and immigrated to Canada at the age of 17 to find new opportunities. She arrived in Calgary in 1957, intending to stay for only two years, but instead married, had a family and established a long and successful career. She was a proud Calgarian and often reminisced about life in Calgary in the early days while marvelling at the booming, vibrant city Calgary has become. Sadie also held a special place in her heart for Scotland, particularly for Paisley, the city where she grew up. She had fond memories of her many visits to the Isle of Islay, during her school holidays and staying with her Aunt Mary. After she came to Canada, on her return trips home she always made a special effort to spend a few days in her beloved Islay. She had a long and successful career in the Stock Transfer business at both Canada Trust and Montreal Trust, starting at a time when the oil boom in Calgary was in its early days. Sadie had a passion for the business and was always willing to share her vast expertise, providing guidance and mentoring to her many colleagues over the years. She was highly respected and well known within the industry for her professionalism and knowledge; everybody knew Sadie. After retiring in 1995, she continued to work as a consultant before fully retiring in 2000. Sadie was well read, with a keen interest in business, politics and current events. During the summer months, she was an avid gardener, spending many hours tending to her lawns and flowers. She enjoyed many happy times walking her dogs at Greenview dog park and through Confederation Park. Sadie loved Scottish Terriers, having had three special dogs (Shandi, Sassie and Willie) and then the company of two Labradors (Utah and most recently, Max). She was a big fan of professional golf and always looked forward to watching the Ryder Cup (cheering for the Europeans) and the Masters. Sadie was a very special person, always positive, very British, liked her Scotch with coke and at all times looked for the best in people. Her laugh was infectious and she always saw the bright side, regardless of the situation.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to several bystanders, Calgary EMS and the Calgary Firefighters for their heroic efforts and the kindness they extended at a very difficult time.
A private family service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2014, with a memorial celebration to be announced at a later date. Friends who would like to make a donation in honour of Sadie, are asked to contribute to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca , a charity for which she canvassed.
