REID, Gordon Wesley

REID, Gordon Wesley

August 6, 1921 – September 30, 2011

Gordon Wesley Reid passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre at the age of 90 years, on Friday September 30, 2011.

Gordon was born on the family homestead near Dafoe, Saskatchewan, the youngest of eleven children, born to John & Mary Reid. Gordon farmed, trapped and worked out as needed to keep the farm afloat until 1957 when he moved his wife May and three children to Calgary to find work. Gordon’s willingness to work hard was only outdone by his determination to do what was right and be of help to his family, friends, neighbours and even strangers. For him if something was worth doing it was worth doing well regardless of how menial the task may be. His children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren were beneficiaries of his kindness, patience and unconditional love and he was loved dearly in return.

He is survived by his sister Martha Froats (Raymore, SK), his children Joyce (Rick), Dan (Pat), & Darlene; grandchildren Allison (Jesse), Shalena (Doug), Barb (Tim), Blaine, Katrina (James), Krystle (Joe), Dennis (Taylor), & Dale; great grandchildren Elizabeth, Victoria, Danielle, Isabelle, Vanessa, Austin & Abagail and numerous nieces and nephews.

HOLBROW, Enid Valentine (nee Joyce )

February 14, 1918 – September 30, 2011

Your memory is our keepsake with which we will never part. God has you in his keeping. We have you in our hearts.

Enid passed away peacefully on September 30, 2011 at Bow View Manor with her grandson, David, at her side.

The youngest of 10 children, Enid was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on February 14, 1918 to Walter and Jane Joyce.

As a young woman she was an active member of the Cameron Memorial Baptist Church in Regina, and was particularly proud of singing in the church choir. While working at the Royal Bank in Regina, Enid met Charlie Holbrow, and they married in 1947. Together they raised a family and Enid worked diligently to create a happy and loving home. She was a fabulous cook, a prolific gardener and she always sang while she worked. Taking care of her family was her highest priority and she was happiest spending time with and baking thousands of cookies for her children and grandchildren.
Enid moved from Regina to Calgary in 2003. Her loving heart, kind spirit, generosity, and wonderful sense of humour were qualities she shared with those around her throughout her entire life.

Enid is predeceased by her husband Charles in 1992; as well as her six brothers, Walter, Frank, Arthur, Wilfred, Leonard, and Frederick Joyce; and her three sisters, Emily Bromby, Dorothy Jones and Ethel Joyce

She is survived by her son Bill (Barbara Dobie) of Calgary and her daughter Charlene (Rick) in Regina as well as 5 grandchildren, one great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.

Enid’s family is very grateful to Dr. Mark Joyce for his compassion and thoughtfulness, and to the amazing staff at Bow View Manor for their capable and loving care. Enid was blessed with wonderful caregivers. Jenifer Walker, Shirley Hartman and Marilyn Eckstrom made a difference in Enid’s life. A very special thanks goes to Enid’s friend Virginia Pettigrew for her gentle, warm and heartfelt care.

To those I love and those that love me
When I’m gone, release me; let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears;
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love you can only guess
How much you give me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you have shown;
But know, it is time I travelled on alone.
So, grieve awhile for me, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It’s only for a while that we must part
So bless the memories with your heart.
I won’t be far away for life goes on.
So, if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me I’ll be near,
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear
All of my love around you soft and dear.
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and wave,
“WELCOME HOME”

“If only” tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I’d walk right up to heaven and bring you BOTH home again.
“If Only…”
