BROCKELSBY– Leslie “Les” George

December 8, 1923 – April 30, 2011

Leslie “Les” George Brockelsby of Calgary, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the age of 87 years.

His zest for life will be remembered by all who knew him – he lived life to its fullest and when he took on a project it was always full speed ahead. Les had many interests including Scouting to which he committed himself for twenty-four years. He also had a passion for magic from a very young age, performing his first magic show at age seven as “The Wonder Boy of Plymouth”. Once retired, his interest in magic returned when he helped organize a local magic club, Calgary Magic Circle – Ring 66 which is now known as the “Les Brockelsby Ring”. Les spent much of his time mentoring aspiring young magicians. His crowning achievement would be the raising of six children together with Rosemary, his wife of fifty-eight years who predeceased him in 2003. The Brockelsby residence was always a welcome home for friends of their children who came to call Les and Rosemary “Mr. and Mrs. B”. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by his children, David, Gerry, Gay, Tim, Nancy and Susan; and his grandchildren, Ryan, Shawna, Scott, Geoff, Jennie, Taylor, Lawren and Kate; and a wide circle of friends in Toronto and Calgary.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Les’ life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. KASPAR – Zbislav (Biz)

In Memorial

November 4, 1932 – April 30, 2011

It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of Zbislav (Biz) Kaspar at the age of 78.
Zbislav will be lovingly remembered by his wife of fifty six years Alena; son Zbysek (Frank) and daughter-in-law Susan; grandchildren, James, Jonathan, Dana, Gaelan, Adrian and his wife Kelsey.
Zbislav was born in 1932 in Brno Czechoslovakia, the only child of Ferdinand Kaspar and Marie Kasparova, where he was educated as an architect. He was a natural academic and talented in all aspects of visual art and music. His career was rewarded by architectural awards and client accolades.
Zbislav was committed to freedom of expression. In 1968, after the invasion of his country by the Soviet Union forces, Zbislav made the decision to remove himself and his family from that oppressive system, leaving behind all of their possessions, life savings and a prominent career. They escaped to Vienna where they were given the opportunity to start a new life in Canada. When a flight to Canada became available on Friday, December 13th, many travelers declined to go because of superstition. Zbislav accepted the flight with enthusiasm and ever since Friday the 13th was celebrated by the family as a lucky day.
Learning English and working menial jobs during the first several years, Zbislav lead his family through hard work and conviction and reclaimed his status as a professional architect. He was a proud member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Alberta Association of Architects and practised architecture with Abugov Kaspar for over twenty years.
Zbislav had many hobbies. He had a great passion for reading, music, photography and travel. Zbislav’s curiosity led him to seventy five different countries with his wife who shared his passion for travel. They were devoted to their friends and enjoyed dinner parties and cultural events tremendously.
Perhaps his greatest attribute was his zest for life and love of his family. Zbislav (Papa) was a very committed grandfather who actively participated in his grandchildren’s care and activities. He patiently spent hours with every single one of them, playing games or just listening to their stories. He will be missed at the weekly family dinners.
Zbislav lived a full life right to the end despite a multitude of ailments. In the last two years he fell in love with Mexico and the kind people there. On a recent visit, as his health was failing him, he decided to leave some of his things behind and told everyone that they will be there for “when I come back.”
Zbislav passed away in his home in the arms of his loving wife Saturday, April 30, 2011.
Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway’s Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive SW) on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

THE HON. HENRY SLATER ROWBOTHAM

THE HON. HENRY SLATER ROWBOTHAM

Henry “Harry” Rowbotham of Calgary, Alberta, died peacefully in his sleep at Staywell Manor on Friday, April 29, 2011.

Harry was born at Rosetown, Saskatchewan on September 30, 1920, one of seven children of Cecil and Bertha Rowbotham who farmed near Stranraer, Saskatchewan. In 1940, Harry interrupted his studies at the University of Saskatchewan to enlist in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving with the North Atlantic Command on convoy escorts. He was quickly promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He returned to the University of Saskatchewan, completing a Bachelor of Laws in 1948. Admitted to the Saskatchewan bar the following year, Harry joined the firm of McKercher, McCool and King in Saskatoon. It was there that he met Doreen McPeak, a legal secretary in the adjacent law firm, Hall Maguire and Wedge. They married in 1950, and relocated to Ottawa where Harry was a solicitor with the Department of National Defence. In 1951, Harry and Doreen moved to Calgary, where he was employed by Western Leaseholds and later by the law department of Gulf Oil. He returned to private practice in 1956 when he went into partnership with fellow Saskatchewan graduate, Mel Shannon. Harry was appointed to the District Court of Alberta in 1970 and to the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta in 1979. He retired from the bench on his seventy-fifth birthday.

Those who knew Harry well will remember him as an avid traveler, enthusiastic reader of history and skilful raconteur. He donated his extensive library to Western Canada High School and to the Military Museums. His intelligence and wit have inspired many, and he passed directly onto his three daughters a passion for learning, travel and fine wine.

Harry is survived by his loving wife, Marie Clarke Rowbotham who he married in 1989; his daughters and sons-in-law Patricia (Douglas Stokes) of Calgary, Elizabeth (Thomas Funk) of Littleton, Colorado, and Victoria (Neil Berman) of Lions Bay, B.C.; grandchildren Charlotte, Anne and Michael Stokes, Kevin and Kristen Funk, and Jonah and Sacha Berman; his brother Peter Rowbotham (Rosetown, Saskatchewan); brother-in-law Keith (Marge) McPeak (Sherwood Park); sister-in-law Georgie Rowbotham (Hamilton, Ontario); stepchildren Gary Clarke, Lisa Clarke (Hugo Potts), Lori Wheeler (Brad), Paul Clarke (Janice) and their families. ASPLUND – Cary Dean

ASPLUND – Cary Dean

May 2, 1991– April 28, 2011

The family and friends of Cary Dean Asplund remember with great joy their son, brother, nephew, team-mate, boyfriend and close friend, who tragically passed away in a car accident on the afternoon of Thursday, April 28, 2011.

Cary graduated in 2009 from Western Canada High School, and had just returned from his first semester at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS.

Cary was often described as a quiet leader, reliable and hard-working. His fun-loving spirit was evident in everything he did, from socializing to excelling at soccer to drumming in his band to his adventures last year through Central and Latin America. He was forever battling to meet and beat challenges – math, soccer, talking to girls, or anything he didn’t really want to do – BUT he did it with a smile on his face! His easy- going and happy demeanour changed his friends’ outlooks on life and Cary told them not to take life so seriously, but to chill. He inspired his friends to do what they loved to do. He was a very caring, compassionate and loyal person, and had a knack for making people feel accepted, loved and that they were important to him. Cary’s family and friends meant everything to him, and he was very proud of his Swedish heritage. Cary loved, protected and cherished his brother Beau, who calls him his role model and hero, and every day made sure he was okay. Cary will be missed forever by all who knew him.

Cary will be missed dearly by his mother Brenda, father Per, and brother Beau, as well as grandma Michener; aunts Barb (Barry), Bev (Clive), Kajsa (Arne), Kitten (Tomas); his cousins Rickard, Sherri, Michelle and Lindsay; and Gracie our loving cat. Cary was predeceased by his grandpa Keith, Farfar Yerker, and Farmor Mary Dean.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Calgary Winter Club (4611 14 Street N.W., Banquet Hall entrance second level) on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
