GRANT – George Walton

GRANT – George Walton

October 25, 1952 – July 30, 2010

George Walton Grant was born in Winnipeg on October 25th, 1952 and died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on July 30th, 2010. He was one of four children born to Murray and Beatrice Grant.

George loved growing up in Winnipeg but chose to leave after graduating from the University of Manitoba to explore new opportunities in Calgary. It was shortly after he arrived there that he met his future wife Audrey. They married on June 30th, 1979 and had three amazing children that were the lights of George’s life. He was extremely proud of them. George was an avid golfer with a single digit handicap that he worked hard at maintaining. He was a long time member at Elbow Springs Golf Club and was thrilled to hold the title of Senior Men’s Champion for the 2008 season. He was an excellent sketcher and was just beginning to expand his talents by taking some painting classes. He was a big fan of the CFL and although the Stamps were his team, he still had a soft spot in his heart for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. George loved to travel and was very happy to see all of his kids spread their wings and span the globe this summer. George generously donated his time to good causes. He often canvassed for The Lung Association, The Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association and he sat on the board of Simon House, a men’s drug and alcohol recovery centre. George had a long and successful career as a Financial Adviser with CIBC Wood Gundy. He had a large number of faithful clients and formed long and lasting friendships with many of them. George will be missed by many people, especially his wife Audrey and their children Ryan, Adam and Taryn. He leaves behind his siblings Carole Small, Jim (Merle) Grant, Joyce McLean, his in-laws Irene Wahl, Bill Wahl, Jim (Heather) Wahl, Laurie Perulett, Patti Wahl, Tom (Anne Marie) Wahl, Joan (Darryl) Chambers, Jane (Chris) Ellingson and many nieces and nephews.

BIGG – Gary John

BIGG – Gary John

February 3, 1951 – July 29, 2010

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary John Bigg, age 59, Barrister and Solicitor, on Thursday, July 29, 2010. Gary was the soul mate and best friend of Marlene, his wife of thirty-seven years; a devoted father to his three sons, Steven (Pamela Daitch), Matthew and Patrick; and a hero to his loyal dog, Polar.

As a man with an extraordinary passion for the law and the administration of civil justice, Gary gave selflessly and generously of his time and resources to the practice of law for over thirty years. He was the co-founder of the Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, the leader and a volunteer for the 9/11 Kahnawake Mohawk victims through the Trial Lawyers Care initiative, the Alberta Governor for the American Association for Justice, and Vice-President of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre for many years. Gary believed in sharing information and knowledge to better serve justice, and devoted many hours to attending and speaking at conferences around the world.

Gary’s insatiable love of life and music, his wry sense of humour and his enthusiasm for the outdoors, adventure and travel was infectious. Gary was larger than life to all who knew him well and his passing will leave a great void. We are comforted by our memories of time spent with him and the lessons he taught us as he bravely dealt with his illness.

Besides his wife and children, also left to mourn Gary’s passing are his mother Effie; brother Gordon (Cathey Eves); sister Dori Wood (James Doleman); brother-in-law Don Richardson (Karen Buehler); aunt and godmother Gladys Bigg; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father Walter, and his infant brother David Alexander.

Funeral Services will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E.) on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
