HASDELL – Jill Louise

HASDELL – Jill Louise

August 14, 1950 – December 31, 2009

It is with broken hearts that we announce Jill’s passing after a five-year battle against breast cancer.

The dignity, grace, and tenacity with which Jill fought her illness was an extension of the same spirit with which she lived her life. She has been an inspiration and support to her husband of thirty-four years David, children Rebecca, Vanessa and Benjamin, friends in Canada and England, former colleagues, and the many people whom she encountered on her journey. Jill’s legacy will continue in her children, who Jill nurtured and encouraged to live lives marked by the compassion and adventure that she modeled.

Jill was born in Northampton, England, where she trained as a registered nurse before moving to Canada with David in 1977. Jill and David settled in Calgary, AB, where Jill worked as a nurse for the next twenty years. She embodied the selfless nature of her career, and even in her illness, family and friends encountered the generosity of her time, attention and care. Along with the endless love invested into her family, Jill found joy in the award winning garden that she built with David.

Jill is survived by her extended family in England – sisters Linda (Bob) and Anita (John), father-in-law Roger, brother-in-law Dennis (Sue), sisters-in-law Catriona (Mick) and Nikki, nieces Hayley (Phil), Jessica, Hollie, Harriet, Emily, Samantha, Georgina and Alexandra, nephews Christian, Lawrence and Joseph, great-niece Mya, and great-nephews Jamie and Luke. Jill was predeceased by her parents (Robert and Iris) and her mother-in-law Joan. Jill and David built an extended “family” in their adopted home in Canada and have shared their life in Calgary with dear friends Pat and Richard and their children Ruth (Graham), Jamie and Tom.

Jill’s family would like to thank the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic and Agapé Hospice, who gave her strength when it was time to fight, and then gave her peace when it was time to let go. A special thank you goes to Jill’s team at the Tom Baker – Debbie Reinheimer, Dr. Alexander Patterson, Dr. Leslie Coulter, Dr. Tara Pickering and Dr. Linda Fong. Jill found support in B.E.S.T, her support group at the Tom Baker, who will miss the “Jill flair”, and the “Boosem Buddies” Support Group at Deer Park United Church.

Funeral Services will be held at Deer Park United Church (77 Deer Point Road S.E.) on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. LANG, Michelle Justine

In Memorial

January 31, 1975 – December 30, 2009

Michelle was tragically taken from us doing what she loved, reporting for her newspaper on a brand-new assignment: the valiant efforts of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan. Recently arrived in Kandahar – and determined to capture the real story of life in Afghanistan for both military and civilians – she was suddenly, unbelievably, torn from us along with four Canadian soldiers on December 30, 2009.

Her fiancé, Michael Louie and his parents; her parents, Art and Sandra Lang; brother Cameron and fiancée Sandra Benavides and her parents; Granddad Art and her aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and many friends and colleagues will mourn and miss her dearly.

Michelle was born in Vancouver early in the morning of January 31, 1975. She was the first grandchild in the family and adored by all. A bright light throughout her school years, Michelle attended Maple Grove Elementary and Magee Secondary mere blocks from her home in Kerrisdale. While a student at Simon Fraser University, she ‘got the reporting bug’. On one of her co-op work terms she got to do the real thing as a reporter for the weekly Prince George Free Press – where she had her first taste of notoriety. Forging on to the daily Moose Jaw Times Herald for a short while, Michelle was soon recruited by the Regina Leader Post to cover the agriculture beat, quite a change for a girl from Kerrisdale where tending flowers is the only agricultural activity! Fortunately she had relatives who farmed nearby and they were able to pass on some of the ‘real dirt’ on the industry. Then she moved on to Calgary and the Herald, where she recently was awarded a National Newspaper Award for her outstanding journalism. Respected by all, Michelle made many friends wherever she worked and was a source of great pride and joy to her family.

But journalism was only one of her passions. Michelle loved life and enjoyed many activities and interests, some of which resulted in sports injuries that she took in her stride. She was tenacious in everything she undertook. And as fate would have it, she met the love of her life, Michael Louie, in Calgary. They were engaged and were to be married on July 3, 2010.

Michelle was able to light up the room with her smile and engaging manner. There are not enough superlatives in any language to do full justice to her and no words to express how much she meant to everyone whose lives she touched.

As her brother Cameron said, “The world was a far better place with her in it.”

There will be a Service to Remember Michelle at First Alliance Church (12345-40 Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. In living memory of Michelle Lang, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.
