Rissling, Magdalena ‘Lena

Lena Rissling of Red Deer, AB passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the age of 89 years.

Lena was born in Revenue, SK to Bernard and Magdelana Schmidt the second oldest of ten children. She lived there until she was married in 1944 to John Rissling. They lived on a farm in Denzil, SK, later moving to Kerrobert, SK. She lived in Red Deer at Waskasoo Towers for twenty-three years until the time of her passing. While living at Waskasoo Towers, Lena enjoyed the company and many great friendships of other seniors and partook in various activities at the facility.

Lena is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jim and Sherry of Red Deer; three daughters, Lucille of Kelowna, BC, Millie and her husband Ken Schmelke and Kathy Baier all of Red Deer; five grandchildren, Gerry (Kirsten) Baier, Scott (Jennifer) Baier, Kevin Rissling, Sharla (Mike) Dietz, Heather (Trevor) Roth; three great- grandchildren, Emma and Adelle Dietz and Freya Craven (Baier). She is also survived by three sisters, Aggie (Fred) Guth, Lucy Ackerman of Unity, SK and Lizzie Reiter of Edmonton; as well as her brother Joe (Betty) Schmidt of Edmonton. Lena was predeceased by her loving husband John Rissling in 1969, grandson Graham Dodds in 1999 and four brothers.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (5508 48A Avenue) in Red Deer, AB on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Interment Service to follow at Alto-Reste Memorial Gardens in Red Deer. Gutek, Aloysia (Rusty)

Aloysia (Rusty) Gutek, beloved wife of Harold passed away peacefully in Calgary on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the age of 60 years. Rusty’s life journey began in Macklin, SK and took her through Edmonton, Calgary, Lloydminster, Saudi Arabia, and finally a return to Calgary in 1984. It reflected a passionate appreciation of nature’s beauty which was sharpened by countless mountain hikes and international travel with many treasured friends. In early 2008 Rusty’s enthusiasm for travel and adventure took her back to the Middle East with her husband to visit Israel and Palestine. She was inspired by the biblical sites with their enduring messages. Rusty’s drive for perfection, taste, and beauty was captured in every social feast she created for family and friends. She revelled in taking hospitality to its highest levels. Devotion to her family provided them with meticulous loving care and concern. Later, grandchildren were nourished by this same constant dedication and attention. Rusty’s focus on detail and commitment to her work colleagues were the hallmark of an accomplished career as a medical lab technologist. Her community involvement included participation in her church’s folk choir and a stint as an executive member of the Calgary Foothills PC Association and was highlighted by her selection as an ambassador for Alberta’s centennial celebration in 2005. Besides her loving husband Harold, Rusty is survived by daughters Colleen and Patricia; their spouses Peter and Bryan; and grandchildren Avery and Emerson; as well as eight brothers, three sisters and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and one sister. The family extends a special thanks to the physicians and staff at the General and Princess Margaret Hospitals in Toronto as well as the physicians and staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary for their care and encouragement during the past two years. Rusty was cared for in her NW home overlooking the city she loved with assistance from the Calgary health region’s Home Care Response Team and friend Rose until the day before her passing. Irvine, Thomas (Tom) Brady

Thomas Brady Irvine, beloved husband of Ione, passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2008 after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Tom was born on September 18, 1943 in Lancaster, England to Thomas and Roseanne (nee Duffin) Irvine and they immigrated to Canada in 1955. Tom graduated from Father MacDonald High School and then attended Sir George Williams University in Montreal. Tom moved to Calgary in 1975. He had a very successful career in the oil and gas industry in Calgary, Houston, TX and, most recently, Whitehorse, YT. Sports were of special interest to Tom and he was a gifted athlete playing football and running track. He also loved to golf, sail, and ski. He also loved to golf, sail, and ski. Tom was also a member of the Whitehorse Rotary club.

Besides his loving wife Ione of Calgary, Tom is survived by his brother Stewart (Jackie) of Toronto and their children Joelle, Montreal and Marc, Toronto. Parents-in-law Lorne and Dorothy Storey of Davidson, SK; sister and brother-in-law Jennifer Gaye and Eugene Thompson and their family; Veronica (Jim) McKitrick and daughter Rosie; Andrea Thompson and son Kyler, all of Kelowna; and Mike Thompson of Saskatoon. Tom dearly loved each of his nieces and nephews and took great delight in spending time with them. Tom was predeceased by his parents and grandparents.

Memories of Tom will be of his dry wit, determination, and his pride for his Scottish heritage. We will also fondly remember Tom for his constant cup o’ tea, his love of sports, how handsome he looked in his kilt, and his stoic dignity throughout his long illness.

Woods, John Francis

John Francis Woods, beloved husband of Carol Vivian Woods, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2008 at the age of 78 years.

John was born on December 10, 1929 in Halifax, NS; graduated from Catholic high school in 1947 and married Carol Vivian Talbot on October 25, 1952 in Gimli, MB.

In 1948, John began his lifelong career in the Canadian Air Force in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, as Aircraft technician. Over the years he was stationed in Camp Borden (1948 to 1949); Gimli, MB (1950 to 1952); MacDonald, MB (1952); Portage la Prairie (1952 to 1959); Marville, France (1959 to 1963); Greenwood, NS (1963 to 1971); and Ottawa (1971 to 1984). He retired in 1984, as a Major.

John was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus and devoted most of his spare time to numerous community charities and church activities especially after he retired.

John is survived by his wife Carol; his six children, Teresa, David, Michael, Michaelle, Elizabeth, and Stephen; and two grandchildren, Sean Vipond and Magee Woods.

Catherine Theresa (Kay) Schwab of Calgary passed away at the Southwood Hospice on October 27, 2008 at the age of 94 years.

Born in the Creston, BC area, Kay resided in Edmonton, AB, Uranium City, SK, Vancouver, BC and in Calgary for the last four years.

Catherine was predeceased by her first husband, William Davidoff in 1955; second husband, Joe Schwab in 1980 and her only daughter, Donna in 2001.
