Jean Ellison of Calgary, formerly of Oshawa, ON peacefully passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at the age of 79 years.

Jean is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Rick and Jan; and two grandchildren Jenny and Jamie.

Groves, James Ross

James Ross Groves, beloved husband of Cathy (nee Swaenepoel), passed away suddenly at Foothills Hospital on December 29, 2006 at the age of 51 years.

Jim was born at Souris, Manitoba, on April 17, 1955. Upon completion of his education, he took employment with the C.P. Rail, where he continued to work until the time of his passing. Jim was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and Trout Unlimited Canada. Both fishing and helping out on “Ken’s” farm were hobbies of his.

Besides his loving wife, Jim has left to mourn his children, Michelle, Geoff, and Karen, and his grandson Riley. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Flora and Gordon Groves, as well as his brother-in-law, Robert Duguid.

Davidson, Marlene Mary

Marlene Mary Davidson, beloved wife of Charlie Vaskovics of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at the age of 64 years.

Marlene was born in Dover, England on May 15, 1942. In 1946, she moved with her mother Katé and sister Valerie to southern Alberta. She lived in Medicine Hat as a housewife and mother of three wonderful children. In 1973 they moved to Calgary and Marlene trained as a paralegal secretary. In 1977 she moved to Lethbridge where she worked as a legal secretary for a firm specializing in real estate. In 1979 she returned to Calgary and began her career as a real estate agent for the Sutton Group. She remained active in real estate until retiring in 1998. Marlene had many passions. She was a consummate people-person, with many caring friends. She touched people in a special way wherever she went. She had the rare ability to develop unique relationships with people from all walks of life. Marlene loved the outdoors where she spent much valued time with family and friends. She loved to travel and enjoyed sharing with all her trip to Hungary with her husband Charlie. She loved Christmas and decorating – festive food made her parties special. Marlene loved to garden and spent much time and effort in her own special place – her backyard flower garden. She loved her dogs, Rolley and Grizzly. They were her constant companions. Marlene loved life and made the most of every day. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Besides her loving husband Charlie, Marlene is survived by a son Scott and Lee Huff of Kalispell, Montana; two daughters, Alison and John Koopmans of Lethbridge, AB, Colleen Huff and Brenda Swenson of Winnipeg, MB; six grandchildren, Mark, Brad, Matt, Jenna, Cassie, and Joshua. She is also survived by her sister Valerie Rance of Medicine Hat, AB; and brother Raymond and Mary Lynn May of Sherwood Park, AB.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Kathleen Marie Goss (nee McCarthy) on December 29, 2006, at the age of 51 years. She was recently battling breast cancer complications, which resulted in cardiac arrest.

Kathleen is survived by her loving husband, Rob, and her two beautiful daughters, Nicole and Lindsay. She is also remembered by her brothers, Peter, Brian, and Daniel McCarthy; her sisters, Maureen McCarthy and Naomi DiRago; her dad, Owen, and his wife, Mary McCarthy; Mary’s family, Cathy Davies, Cheryle Tilly, and Bill McNabb; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Kathleen was predeceased by her mother, Virgina McCarthy (nee Porter).

Kathleen was born to Owen and Virginia McCarthy in Toronto, Ontario, on June 6, 1955. She was an active volunteer in the church, including the youth advisory council, Eucharistic ministry, pastoral care, sacramental preparation, and Sunday school. In addition, she volunteered at her daughters’ schools within class, on hot lunch committees, on the community of caring committee, as secretary within the music society, and as secretary on the parent’s council. Within the community she was a blood donor, and gave generously to many charities. In July of 2006 Kathleen landed her dream job, as student advisor within Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Cook, John T.

Cook, John T.

During his life Jack fought many battles with great bravery. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and continued to fight to the end of his life as he stoically battled the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.

With the support of his two boys Jack was able to live out his final years in the family home in Calgary. He eventually lost his fight and succumbed to pneumonia in the Rockyview Hospital.

Jack is survived by his two sons Byron and Trevor, his sister Jeanette Bonney, Christine, Anne, numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 January 3rd at McInnis and Holloway Park Memorial Chapel at 5008 Elbow Drive SW.

Doris Skimmings of Priddis passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at the age of 100 years.

Doris was born November 6, 1906 in Cornholm, Lancashire, England and immigrated to Canada in 1949. She was a member of the Snowbirds Seniors in Bragg Creek. Doris enjoyed crocheting dolls and competed in the Calgary Stampede and the Millarville Fair in which she won numerous ribbons.

Doris is survived by a son David and his wife Sandra Skimmings of Priddis; two grandchildren, Barry and his wife Connie Skimmings and Patricia and her husband Brian Shandruk all of Priddis; two great grandchildren, Craig and his wife Christie of Bragg Creek and Ryan Skimmings of Priddis; a great-great-granddaughter Tessa Skimmings of Bragg Creek; as well as her step son Roy Skimmings and his family of Calgary. Doris was predeceased by her husband Robert Skimmings in 1989.

Steve (Eleven Frogs) Collins beloved husband of Maureen Big Plume of Tsuu T’ina Nation, has been called home by our Creator on Sunday, December 24, 2006 at the age of 76 years.

Steve was born in Saddle Lake, AB. He met his wife Maureen of T’suu T’ina where they traveled the world with “Up with People”. Steve was a self-employed farmer, who had a humorous personality which drew all who loved him closer. He was a spiritual man who believed in his culture strongly. Steve had a voice which he used to sing Indian or Country Western styles of music. His passion was the time cherished with his children and grandchildren. Those who knew Steve will always remember his infectious smile, surpassed by his humorous side which earned him the name “Eleven Frogs”.

Steve was a caring, loving and kind father to Casey Big Plume, Wendy (Norris) Big Plume and Melody Paquayak; he will be forever remembered by his grandchildren Ryan (Jen) Big Plume, Josh (Lisa) Big Plume, Kyle (MJ) Big Plume, Beau Big Plume, Raine Big Plume, Maureen (Reggie) Big Plume) Cayley Big Plume, Peter (Casey) Pasquayak, Chad Pasquayak; and his great grandchildren Sierra, Joshua Jr., Justice, Langdon and Jaslin. Steve is also survived by his sister Josephine Steinhauer and Agnus Houle; brother-in-law Tom Big Plume; special friend Jack Hervey and his family, Rodney (Yvonne) Big Crow, Sandford (Brenda Big Plume; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Steve was predeceased by his wife Maureen and his grandson Rayzon Phoenix Big Plume.

Steve was a mentor and a friend to many. We will miss him so much, but his memory will be kept alive.

Boyle, Michael

Michael Boyle passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Sunday, December 24, 2006.

Born in Montreal, boyhood in the Maritimes, Michael’s military service took him to work and live in many places across Canada and around the world. During his posting in Germany, he met his beloved second wife, Rina (died April 2005).

Michael was very active over the past 20 years in lay ministry at the Sacred Heart Church. He served on the Parish Council and Building Committee, and additionally as a Eucharistic minister and lector. Michael served as an RCIA leader and catechist, helping dozens of adults prepare to be received into the Church.

Michael’s deep commitment to his wife during her final illness, his religious devotion and his passion for classical music sustained him in recent years.

Survived by sisters, Sheila Lachman (Charles), Mary Labram(Sam); his brother Sandy Boyle (Pierrette). He will also be greatly missed by his stepdaughter Anne “Didi” Buston (Garnet Barlow) and his stepson, Edward Mullens (Gail) and their families.

Roy was a long-time member of Al Azhar Shriners, the Willow Park Golf and Country Club, and the Shaw-nee Slopes Golf Course.
