Miller, Gene

Allen Miller of Calgary passed away suddenly on April 27, 2006 at the age of 53 years. Allen was raised in Lethbridge, Alberta and moved to Calgary in 1976. Allen will be remembered for his boisterous and outgoing nature, quick wit, and his love and respect for his family. Although Allen had wandered in recent years from close ties with his family, they will cherish their memories of him. Allen will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews Nicole, Christopher, Sean and Curtis; brother Dale (Maria), sister Terry (Don), stepsisters Carol (Russ), Trish (Colin), stepbrothers Scott (Sharon) and Craig(Anita). He was predeceased by his father Gene, Mother Elaine and stepmother Shirley.

Hinton, Robert George (Bob)

Robert George Hinton Sr. of Calgary passed away peacefully on Friday, April 28, 2006 at the age of 80 years.

Bob was born on August 15, 1925 in Birmingham, England and immigrated to Trail, BC with his family in 1926. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. Bob and his wife Roseanne moved to Calgary in 1964 to begin their own business. It was here that they spent many happy years with family and friends. Bob was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch #285 for many years, volunteering for the Annual Poppy Drive, Veterans’ luncheons, and the Legion Lottery. He was also active in his community playing Santa, dog-sitting, and helping where he could with all the neighbours. Everyone enjoyed Bob and Pepper on their daily walks. Bob spent many hours enjoying his grandchildren’s activities and hanging out at many baseball diamonds. He shared his joy of life, sense of humour, generosity, and his genuine compassion with all. He will be greatly missed by all those he touched.

Bob is survived by two sons, Rob and Sylvie, Gary and Karen; daughter-in-law ThÚr_se, all of Calgary; five grandchildren, Charlie, Jessica, Ben, Thom, and Ty; and his beloved dog Pepper. He is also survived by a brother and two sisters-in-law, Geoff and Mary Hinton and Janet Hinton; three nephews, Jamie, Paul, and David; and two nieces, Norma and Leslie. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-four years Roseanne in 1999; and his brother Norm.

Pogontcheff, Robert

Bob Pogontcheff, beloved husband of Mrs. Gordi Pogontcheff of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the age of 82 years.

Bob was born on April 4, 1924 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He later moved to Niagara Falls, ON where remained until he finished his high school diploma. It was at this time that Bob moved to Toronto, ON where he attended The University of Toronto and received both his Bachelors and his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. Bob was married in 1953 to Mary Jane (Gordi) Wharry and they continued to create a beautiful life together for the rest of the time they had. He worked for Shell Oil and at the time of his retirement, was a Vice President of Husky Oil. Bob was in the RCN during WWII, where he was responsible for reconnaissance work in the area of the North Atlantic. Bob was a member of the United Church of Canada. Bob loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoyed playing golf, sitting in the sun on his deck and going to his second home in Arizona .

Besides his loving wife, Bob is remembered by a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Julie Pogontcheff of Edmonton; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Douglas Clenchy of Bragg Creek; three grandchildren, Megan Clenchy, Matthew Clenchy, and Kayla Callfas; and his sister, Zorka Bassil of Toronto, ON. Bob was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Ted Pogontcheff.

Piper (nee Roberts), E.J.

E.J. “Betty” Piper (nee Roberts) of Calgary, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2006 at the age of 92 years.

Betty was born on August 19, 1913 in Winnipeg, MB. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Centennial Branch No. 285.

Betty is survived by her two sons and a daughter-in-law Ron Piper, and Wayne and Diane Piper, all of Calgary; four grandchildren, Ron Piper Jr., Debbie and her husband Glen Garvin, Alicia and her husband Shane Willy, and Michael and his fiancÚe Tamara Craig, all of Calgary; and great-grandchild Craig Garvin and his wife Emily. She was predeceased by her husband, retired Captain A.E. Bert Piper CD, LDSH (RC).

Schnell, Willi

Willi Schnell beloved father of Henry, passed away peacefully in his home in Calgary on April 27, 2006 at the age of 94 years.

Willi was born in Liepzig, Germany on November 04, 1911 and spent his early years working in Germany and was a great sports enthusiast, playing soccer, running marathon and active in scouting. While working in aviation during WWII, he met his wife Josephine Wilhelmiene (Hautphene) Schnell, who predeceased him in 1993 after forty-seven years of marriage. Willi and Josephine with their son immigrated to Canada in 1957, starting a new life in Regina and later resided in Calgary for over forty years. Willi lived with vigour and continued an active life within Calgary, skating with the seniors’ skate program until only last year and he continually explored the world around him.

Willi is survived and will be missed by son Henry (Terilee), and by his loving companion Kate Hackl and her family. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Robert (Irene) Schnell and Pamela (Lucas) Wilson and great granddaughter Jocelyn Wilson.
