Pottie, John Robert

John Robert Pottie passed away peacefully at Agape Hospice on Friday, March 24, 2006 at the age of 86 years.

John Robert was born December 18, 1919 in Halifax, NS. He married Cora Dwyer in February 1946 and they lived most of their life in Halifax until relocating to Calgary in 1987. He was passionate about his family, enjoyed fishing, dancing, billiards and painting and will be remembered for his kind, gentle, and quiet nature.

John Robert will be lovingly remembered by his only daughter and son-in-law Wendy and Frank Vorstermans both of Calgary; granddaughters Andrea Vorstermans of Calgary and Pamela (Darby) Agar of Saskatoon, SK; brothers Vince of Dartmouth, NS and Gordon (Odette), of Chateauguay, QC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews across Canada. He was predeceased by his best friend and beloved wife of fifty-seven years, Cora Pottie in May of 2003, as well as five of his brothers.

Fennessey, Kevin William

Kevin William Fennessey of Calgary, passed away suddenly at the Foothills Medical Centre on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at the age of 45 years.

A native Calgarian, Kevin had many life long friends. He was passionate about sports, had a heart of gold and a generous personality that will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Kevin will be lovingly remembered by his partner, Wendy Anderson; father Bill; and brother and sister-in-law Randy and Andrea, all of Calgary. He was predeceased by his mother Joyce in 2005.

Smith, Mary

Mary Ethel Smith died suddenly at home on March 23rd, 2006, at the age of 63.

She left behind her loving husband of forty years, Richard L. (Dick/Butch); her two sons, Scott, Troy and Carmie Smith and six grandchildren of Calgary; two sisters Norma and Bruce Benson, Kathy and Hans Weinacker; one brother Larry and Nettie Reay; and many nephews, nieces and friends will also miss her. Mary was known for her many acts of kindness, wonderful crafts and tremendous cooking talents. She was a prestigious volunteer.

Cooper, Lorraine

Lorraine R. M. Cooper, began her last journey on Sunday, March 26, 2006, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lorraine is lovingly remembered by her brother, Dr. Leonard Cooper of Guelph, ON, and by numerous relatives in the Edmonton area. She was predeceased by her parents Ruth and Alex Cooper of Calgary.

Her first love in life was flying, obtaining both her private and commercial pilot licenses before the age of nineteen. As one of the youngest women pilots in Canada, she formed the first Canadian Chapter of the Ninety-Niners, an international association of women pilots formed by Amelia Earheart. Due to her contribution to women in aviation she was honoured as a charter member of the Women’s Western Air Museum in Regina.

Lorraine’s enthusiasm for adventure and travel inspired a career change and move to the United States, where she was Vice-President of Hawaii Visitor’s Bureau – Pacific Tourism Marketing and Research. She then joined the management team of American Express new Space Bank system and later the Association of artificial Intelligence. Lorraine returned to Canada to open her own consulting firm in Victoria – Cooper Marketing Meeting.

In 1995 she returned home to be with her family in Calgary and became actively involved in volunteer work with the forest Grove Care Centre, P.A.L.S., and the Calgary zoo where she volunteered as an Education Docent, and Living Collections volunteer.

Hall, Donald Lawrence

Don Hall, beloved husband of Madonna Hall of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at the age of 48 years.

Don was born and raised in Calgary. He worked for Nexen for twenty-six years.

Besides his loving wife, Don is survived by his father Peter; a brother and sister-in-law Steve and Anita; and numerous relatives. Don was predeceased by his mother Margaret and his sister Lori.

De Jager, Victoria Mae

Victoria Mae De Jager, beloved wife of twenty-three years to Ronald John De Jager passed away peacefully from a nine-year battle with Breast Cancer on Monday, March 27, 2006.

Vicky was born on July 10, 1957 in Edmonton, AB to Leonard and Mildred Wheatley. She was one of eleven children. She attended public school in Edmonton graduating with a high school diploma in 1975 from Victoria Composite High School. Upon graduation, she moved out on her own until 1979 when she followed God’s direction and moved to Calgary where she worked as a Para-legal. Vicky met Ron through mutual friends and they were married on December 4, 1982 at Highland Mennonite Brethren Church of Calgary. They were blessed with two daughters, Elise Marie & Arlynn Victoria and one son, Nathaniel Ronald John. Vicky accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at the First Assembly Pentecostal Church in Calgary. Vicky, Ron, Elise and Arlynn went to Zaire for two years of missionary work where Nathaniel was born. Upon completion of their term, they returned to White Rock, BC where they set up their home for the next decade. Vicky and Ron worked together building custom homes with Ron’s parents until relocating to Cochrane, AB in 1998. Vicky looked after the bookkeeping duties for the business as well as other companies. Vicky and Ron built several homes for themselves in Cochrane. Vicky and Ron attend Bow Valley Baptist Church in Cochrane and became members in 1999. Vicky and Ron continued working together at their Project Management consulting business until her passing. Vicky enjoyed her children, old fashioned movies and a good light hearted joke. She would often add a few of her own, which were always enjoyed by all. She enjoyed gardening and warm weather, but raising her children was her top priority. Vicky enjoyed hosting large family gatherings and always made each meal a wonderful experience. Additional guests were always welcome to pull up a chair and join in. Vicky made sure that her children’s scholastic achievements were recognized and all family birthdays were well attended. Family holidays were also very important and she would often take the lead on planning and organizing trips which included Disneyland, Baja, CA, Mexico, Penticton, BC, Costa del Sol, Spain etc. to name a few. Vicky had a gift for organization and for financial responsibility, which her friends and family would often comment on. She would help others with their personal budgets when asked. In her later years, Vicky played drums for the Cochrane Adult Jazz Band. Her sense of rhythm was appreciated by all of the Band members and their Leader, Rob Billington. She actively encouraged her family to pursue their own musical talents. Vicky lived her life to the fullest trusting in God’s guidance in all her decisions. She instilled sound Christian values in her children and taught them to trust God and to always put family first.

Vicky is predeceased by her Father Leonard and oldest brother Bill (Judi). She is remembered in life by her husband Ron; daughters Elise Mitchell (Brad) of Blackfalds, AB, Arlynn; son Nathan; her Mother Mildred Wheatley of Edmonton; sisters Evelyn Oakden of Calgary, Patricia Beggs (Randy), Elsie Untereiner (Lance) both of Edmonton, Margaret Wheatley (Ivan) of Coquitlam, BC; brothers Joe, John (Susan), Tom (Colleen), Mike (Robyn) and Lee (Holly) Wheatley all of Edmonton; many nieces and nephews; as well as Parents-in-law, John & Irene De Jager of Cochrane, AB.

Kozak, Carol M.

Carol M. Kozak, beloved wife of Leo, of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2006 after a long battle with cancer at the age of 66 years.

Carol was born in Melbourne, Australia and moved to Ghana in 1962 to work as a diplomatic secretary to the Australian High Commissioner. There she met and married Leo, the love of her life. Their oldest son, Wayne was born there. Carol and Leo moved back to Canada and after their youngest son, Lance was born, they moved to Gilliam, MB where they spent nearly ten years before moving to Peace River, AB where Carol worked for the Northern Alberta Development Council for sixteen years. In 1997 Carol and Leo retired to Calgary where they spent many very happy times travelling in their motor home, golfing and spending time with friends.

Carol leaves to mourn her passing her husband Leo; two sons and a daughter-in-law Wayne and Lance and Rosanne; two grandchildren Joshua and Kathleen; her sister and brother-in-law Gay and Ian Beeson of Australia and numerous friends and neighbours. Carol was predeceased by her parents Phyllis and Lawrence Knyvett.

Rodych (nee White), Iris Delores Ann

Iris Rodych of Calgary, passed away on the fourth Sunday of Lent, March 26, 2006 at the age of 77 years.

Iris was born on October 8, 1928 in Calgary. She received her education in Swift Current, continuing it in Moose Jaw. She was a long time resident of Frontier, SK and Prince Albert, SK. She has resided in Calgary for the past twelve years. Iris was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be remembered as a woman of great kindness, gentle persuasion, and quiet dignity. She was a woman of deep faith, prayer and devotion who was active in her church. As a teacher she was compassionate and understanding and her students adored her. Thank you Mom, for your love, faith and wisdom, and fine example to all of us.

Predeceased by her husband of fifty-one years, Walter in 2000. Iris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Audrey and Terry Long; her sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Ramona, Ken and Laurelle, Greg and Nancy, Vince and Cheryl, and Murray and Natali; thirteen grandchildren, Tracey, David, Barrett, Rebecca, Nicole, Caitlin, Murray, Jason, Lisa, Jeffrey, Matthew, Jennifer, and Justin; her great-granddaughter Evelyn; her brother Ted White (Lorraine); and her sister Evelyn Murphy.

Grace Alice Elizabeth Loree of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2006 at the age of 90 years.

Grace is survived by her daughter Elizabeth of Calgary; three grandsons, Tyler (Sara), Adam and Joel; and two great-grandchildren, Chance and Emily. She was predeceased by her husband Stan in 1992.
