John Harris, beloved husband of Martha Harris of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, January 30, 2004 at the age of 68 years.

John was born on October 12, 1935 in London, England.

Besides his loving wife Martha, John is survived by his son Mark Harris; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Blair Kemp; grandchildren Megan and Darren Kemp, all from Calgary. He is also survived by his father John Harris of England; a brother George (Eva) Harris of England; Martha’s children, Helen Benavides her daughter Andrea, and son Sebastian; Karen (George) Curnew and son JP Pera; Hans (Cindy) Piepschyk and daughters Justine and Haley; Nicholas Martin; niece Denise (George) Tsares; nephew Trevor (Roshni) Higgs. John was predeceased by his first wife Shirley in 1991.

P. Frank Belway, beloved husband of Lydia Belway of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, January 30, 2004 at the age of 82 years.

Frank was born and raised in Springbank, AB, and was the youngest of twelve children. He served four years in the Navy during World War II. Husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather will be missed by all.

Besides his loving wife Lydia, Frank is survived by his two sons and their spouses, Wayne and Linda Belway and Brian and Maureen Belway; and his older brother Ed Belway. He will be remembered by his four grandchildren, Jeff (Ally), Marnie (Brian), Craig (Jodi), and Kevin; and three great grandchildren, Justin, Brett and Sean.

Handford, Evelyn Margaret

Evelyn Margaret Handford of Calgary passed away at the Bethany Care Centre Harvest Hills on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the age of 96 years.

Evelyn was born on November 17, 1907 in Moose Jaw, SK. She moved to Ladner, BC where she met Richard Handford, and they were married in Penticton, BC in 1929. In 1942 the happy couple moved to Edmonton, and in 1943 they relocated to Fort Saskatchewan where they operated a small farm. They returned to British Columbia in 1972 to live in Abbotsford. Richard passed away in 1985, and in 1990 Evelyn moved to a care home where she remained until 2000 when she came to Calgary to be nearer to her family. She had many adventures throughout her life and had many stories to share with others.

Evelyn is survived by two daughters and a son, Maxine Perrier of Auckland, New Zealand, Beverley (Mike) Badran of Nanaimo, BC and Richard Handford of Fox Creek, AB; ten grandchildren, Kim, Randy and Kevin Perrier, Tracy Craig, Shanne Johnson, Michael, Lori and Steve Badran, Holly Hurst, and Carrie Hunley; and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Richard, granddaughter Lynn Badran, and daughter-in-law Freda Handford.

Jenny Aitken of Calgary, passed away at the Southwood Care Centre on Friday, January 30, 2004 at the age of 82 years.

Jenny was born December 9, 1921 in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1982. Jenny was from a family of nine children.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Morag Aitken; and a daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Blaine Hodgins all from Calgary; four grandchildren, Kim Aitken and her fiancÚ James Ryan, Hillary and Jari Sokkanen, Sonya Hodgins and Scott Hodgins. Jenny was predeceased by her husband Richard in 1976.

McKinney, Christine (Chris) Joan

It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of a wonderful mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Christine (Chris) Joan McKinney (nee Walls) of Calgary passed away suddenly at her home on Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at the age of 47 years. Her grace and beauty will be forever remembered. She celebrated life everyday.

Chris was born in Calgary on April 30, 1956. She attended Tuxedo Elementary, Balmoral and Senator Patrick Burns Junior High Schools, and graduated from William Aberhart as class valedictorian in 1973. Chris resided with her two children, Breanna and Ryan Dillon, in Toronto until returning to Calgary in 1990. To her surprise and delight, she added Connor to her loving family in 1998. Chris worked for London Life in the early 1990s, and Synergea and McKinney Industries until her death. She will be forever remembered in our hearts and minds for her quick wit and “punctuality”. Her entrepreneurial spirit inspired and motivated many of the people who knew her.

Chris will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by her children, Breanna and Ryan Dillon, and Connor McKinney; her sister Lynne (Vic) Margetts; her brother Clayton Walls (Carolyn Patton); her loving nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Dayna, Hayden, Tannis and Zoeyy; and her friend of thirty-four years, Cindy (McQuay) Lambert. She will also be deeply missed by Vernon McKinney, Wayne (Victoria) Dillon, and Duane Sharman; as well as her cousins, aunts, and uncles in Alberta, Ontario, England, New Zealand, and the U.S. She was predeceased by her mother Olga (Pluta) in 1979, and father Cliff Walls in 2000.

Crotty, Brigadier Alma

Brigadier Alma Crotty of Calgary passed on to her eternal reward on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at the age of 92 years after a brief illness.

Brigadier Crotty served in the Western Territory of the Salvation Army in the United States from 1940 to 1972 when she retired to Burnaby, BC, where she worked for the Salvation Army for about ten years. Three years ago she moved to Calgary to be closer to her special families.

She leaves to mourn two nieces, Anne Wells of Sydney, BC and Carmen Raymond of Peterborough, ON; a nephew William Harrington of Sturgeon Heights, AB; numerous great-nieces and nephews; many great-great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-great-nieces and nephews. Her special families will also miss her, Major Ray and Elsie Van Schaick and family, Dave and Ruth Wylie and family, all of Calgary; and her long time friend Winifrede Green of Toronto, ON.

Florence was born May 25, 1922 in Parkland, AB. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Lynda and Henry and Kathy and two grandchildren, Melanie and Nickolas. She was predeceased her husband Marian in 1998.

Mary Elsie Duffin (nee Higgins) of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Sunday, January 25, 2004 at the age of 86 years.

Elsie was born in Drumheller on August 17, 1917. She is survived by four sons, Bob (Liz) of Kingston, ON, Tom (Grace) of Smithers, BC, Marc and Scott of Calgary; two daughters Billie Mleczko and Jan (Ted) Gauthier of Calgary. Elsie will be sadly missed by her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as many other family members. She will be lovingly remembered by all. Elsie was predeceased by her husband Jim in August of 2000 and her son Ward in October of 2002.

Medicine Traveller, Raymond

Raymond Medicine Traveller passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Saturday, January 24, 2004, surrounded by his loving family.

Dad was very dedicated and worked very hard to support his family. Raymond will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. He enjoyed his drumming and singing, traveling extensively throughout Canada and the United States.

As a young man, Raymond drummed with A-1, Big Four and the Little Axe drumming group. A memorable experience for Raymond was drumming and singing during the Opening Ceremony of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

Raymond will be lovingly remembered by his children, Pearline, Rosa, Jerome, Sandra, Curtis (Denise) Woodrow, Fanny (Len), Cheryl (Joe), and Myra. He is also survived by his brothers, Allan (Virginia) Medicine Traveller, Adrian (Leslie) Stimson Sr.; twenty-six grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; adopted children, Liz (Alvin) Big Crow; stepson Ross Old Woman; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins too many to mention; Auntie Mary Running Rabbit; the Poor Eagle family; the White Eagle family; and the Maguire/Big Old Man family. The family would like to apologize for anyone they have missed. Raymond was predeceased by his wife Caroline; his daughter Wanda; granddaughter Jasmine, grandsons, Sounder and B. J.; parents, Rita and Emil Medicine Traveller; his brothers, Danny and R. B. Medicine Traveller; sisters, Hazel McMaster, Jane Good Eagle; Auntie Annie Maguire, and Uncle Jack Medicine Traveller.
